Abstract

The global halal food market is experiencing unprecedented growth, paralleled by increasing consumer and regulatory demands for environmental sustainability. This article explores the critical intersection of these two trends, focusing on the emerging field of sustainable halal food packaging. Drawing upon Islamic principles of Khalifa (stewardship) and Tayyib (wholesomeness), we argue that sustainable practices are not merely an add-on but an intrinsic extension of halal integrity. This paper synthesizes current literature on the drivers, material innovations, and regulatory challenges within this niche. Key drivers include evolving Muslim consumer preferences, corporate social responsibility, and global environmental legislation. The article examines promising sustainable materials such as bioplastics, recycled content, and active packaging, highlighting their potential for halal compliance. Challenges, including cost, infrastructure, and the need for harmonized certification standards, are also discussed. We conclude with recommendations for industry, certifiers, and policymakers to foster the development and adoption of truly sustainable and halal-compliant packaging solutions, paving the way for a more ethical and environmentally responsible food future.
