A Review of Government-level Initiatives in Saudi Arabia for the Critique of Orientalism

Abstract

This research article explores the efforts made by the government of Saudi Arabia to respond and counter Orientalist narratives, particularly those targeting the Prophet Muhammad PBUH. Since its establishment, the Kingdom has grounded its identity in the implementation of Islamic principles and the promotion of religious values. King Abdulaziz Al Saud, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, initiated this vision by strengthening Islamic practices and institutions in the early years of the state. One important aspect of this religious mission has been the defense of the Prophet’s honor and legacy against critical or misleading portrayals by Orientalist scholars and religious figures from the West. Over time, Saudi leaders have taken deliberate steps to address these challenges. This article highlights a variety of initiatives such as organizing national and international conferences, establishing dedicated research centers, publishing refutational works, and supporting platforms for dialogue with global audiences. These measures reflect a serious and ongoing effort to clarify misunderstandings about Islam and to uphold the Prophet’s esteemed position in both academic and public spheres. By looking into these efforts, the study offers a deeper understanding of how Saudi Arabia engages with modern intellectual challenges while remaining rooted in its religious foundations. It shows that the Kingdom is not only defending its religious heritage but also contributing to the broader Islamic scholarly response to Orientalism. In doing so, Saudi Arabia emerges as an active voice in protecting the image of Islam in today's interconnected world.
