Abstract

This research article develops several themes of the Prophetic biography (Sīrah) as in Musnad Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawilī, an influential hadith work composed in the 3rd century by Imām Abū Yaʿlā (d. 307 AH). The work examines 175 narrations concerning the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s life from the Musnad, including key events such as infancy (Riḍāʿah), chest-splitting (Shaqq al-Ṣadr), the first revelation, persecution of the Quraysh, oaths of al-ʿAqabah, migrations to Abyssinia and Madinah, erection of Qubā and the Prophet’s Mosque, brotherhood (Muʾākhāh) of the Muslims, change of Qiblah, Treaty of Ḥudaybiyyah, and some of the battles (Ghazawāt) like Badr, Uḥud, Khandaq, Khaybar, Ḥunayn, and Tabūk. Among the 175 Sīrah-related narrations examined, 96% were found authentic or sound (Ṣaḥīḥ or Ḥasan) while 4% were weak (Ḍaʿīf). The article assesses the authenticity of these narrations in light of the views of leading hadith scholars such as al-Haythamī and Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī. The research holds that Musnad Abū Yaʿlā is an important source material for pursuing the Sīrah, containing quality traditions that play an important role in the comprehension of the Prophet’s ﷺ’s biography.
