Abstract

Ilm-ul-Fawasil is one of the most important means of preserving the Quran, as it covers the protection of the numbers of surahs, verses, words and letters of the Holy Quran, so that it is not compromised like other Quranic sciences, this knowledge is also a manifestation of divine guidance. The Prophet (PBUH) used to pause on each verse during the recitation, especially in the prayers. It purpose was to teach the number of the verses. Sometimes he would pause in another place instead of the and of the verse for the sake of the subject, as some have understood the end of the verse and so on. The number of verses of the Holy Quran which are six different numbers (Madani al- awal, Madani al- akhir, Makki, Basari, Damascus, Koofi) is based on this difference of narration. Othervise the difference in the number of verses does not mean that some took, some verses and some left them. Rather, this difference is only about the location of the last verse (distance).
