Abstract

The Umayyad period (661 CE - 750 CE) holds a significant place in Islamic history, particularly in the development and dissemination of Islamic sciences, including the preservation and propagation of Hadith. During this time, both scholars (Muhaddithin) and rulers played a crucial role in safeguarding, compiling, and spreading the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Although political circumstances occasionally impacted religious scholarship, the dedication of scholars and certain rulers ensured the continued transmission of Hadith. The expansion of the Islamic Caliphate during the Umayyad rule facilitated the spread of Hadith across different regions. Muhaddithin remained committed to preserving Hadith both through oral transmission and written documentation. One of the most notable figures of this era was Imam al-Zuhri (d. 124 AH), recognized as one of the earliest compilers of Hadith. His efforts were greatly supported by Caliph Umar bin Abdul Aziz (RA), who took a historic step by officially ordering the documentation and compilation of Hadith. This initiative became a milestone in the preservation and dissemination of Hadith.Several academic centers emerged during this period, where Hadith was systematically taught and scrutinized. Major cities like Medina, Mecca, Basra, Kufa, and Damascus became hubs of Hadith scholarship. Scholars established rigorous standards to verify the authenticity of narrations and ensure the integrity of Islamic teachings. Some Umayyad caliphs played a positive role in supporting Hadith scholarship. Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan and Caliph Sulayman ibn Abd al-Malik encouraged scholarly activities, while Caliph Umar bin Abdul Aziz (RA) not only institutionalized the compilation of Hadith but also took practical steps to promote authentic Hadith among the Muslim community. However, the Umayyad period was not without its challenges. Some rulers were accused of promoting selective narrations or imposing restrictions on certain Hadith. Despite these political pressures, the scholars maintained their commitment to academic integrity by strictly adhering to the principles of Hadith verification and transmission. Overall, the Umayyad period played a crucial role in the promotion and preservation of Hadith, thanks to the dedication of scholars and the support of certain rulers. While political challenges existed, the efforts of Muhaddithin ensured that the Hadith tradition remained intact, allowing for further documentation and expansion in subsequent generations. This is why the Umayyad era is regarded as a significant phase in the history of Hadith scholarship within the broader Islamic intellectual tradition.
