Abstract

Islam is a religion that provides guidance in every aspect of life, particularly in matters related to the family system. Its teachings on financial maintenance (Nafaqah) are comprehensive and balanced, playing a crucial role in strengthening the foundation of the family structure. Nafaqah is not limited to the financial rights and responsibilities between husband and wife; rather, it is a broader concept that also includes the financial support of parents, children, and, in certain cases, other close relatives. Due to global social and cultural transformations, different societies have developed diverse family structures. One such structure is the Matrilineal Family system, where lineage, inheritance, and family organization revolve around women. In such systems, the upbringing and basic needs of children are often the responsibility of the mother’s family, while the role of the father is generally considered limited. According to Islamic teachings, financial maintenance is primarily the responsibility of men—whether as husbands, fathers, or sons. However, in matrilineal families, where the family structure differs from the traditional patriarchal system, it is important to understand how the obligations of financial support are defined in light of Islamic principles. A key question arises: In such societies, does the responsibility of financial maintenance still lie with the father, or do other relatives, such as the maternal grandfather, maternal uncle, or other close family members, also share this obligation? This article will analyze the principles of financial maintenance (Nafaqah) in matrilineal family systems from an Islamic perspective. It will examine whether Islamic financial obligations apply in this unique family structure and how Islam ensures justice and balance, allowing every individual to fulfill their rights and responsibilities effectively.
