Abstract

In Islam, the joint family system is regarded as an important social structure where individuals live together based on principles of mutual love, tolerance, and cooperation. This system is founded on brotherhood, selflessness, and mutual responsibility, providing emotional, social, and financial stability to all family members. According to Islamic teachings, it is obligatory for the head of the family, i.e., the husband, to fulfill all necessary expenses of his dependents within his means. The payment of dowry (Mahr) is a fundamental component of marriage and is obligatory upon the husband. Providing food, clothing, medical care, and other basic necessities to all family members is the husband's primary responsibility. Arranging suitable accommodation for the family is also a part of his duties, ensuring they live in a secure and comfortable environment. In a joint family system, it is essential for adult and earning individuals to contribute to the overall family expenses according to their financial capacity. This ensures that the financial burden does not fall on one person alone and that all members share this responsibility equally. This system not only maintains financial balance but also fosters love and unity among family members. Islamic teachings emphasize transparency in financial matters to prevent misunderstandings and disputes. To ensure financial clarity, the following principles should be followed: Regular consultations should be held among family members so that everyone remains informed about financial matters and no individual feels overburdened. Proper documentation of financial expenses, whether written or verbal, should be maintained to avoid misunderstandings. Every individual should practice honesty and integrity in financial dealings to maintain mutual trust. Islam has established clear principles regarding inheritance and property distribution, which, if followed, can prevent future disputes. The Holy Quran, particularly Surah An-Nisa, provides detailed guidelines on inheritance, ensuring that each heir receives their rightful share. Property and inheritance should be distributed according to the principles outlined in the Quran and Hadith to ensure fairness. Justice and fairness should be maintained in inheritance matters to prevent conflicts among relatives. If an individual wishes to specify particular instructions regarding the distribution of their property, they should document them in the form of a will. The joint family system, in accordance with Islamic teachings, provides an ideal social structure where individuals adhere to principles of love, brotherhood, and selflessness. By maintaining financial transparency, ensuring a fair division of expenses, and following Islamic guidelines on inheritance, family members can lead a prosperous and peaceful life. If Islamic principles are fully embraced, this system can serve as a foundation for family stability and social welfare.
