The Relationship of Sufis with the Hadith during the Seljuk Era: An Analytical Study
Abstract
This article undertakes an analytical study of the relationship between Sufis and the Hadith during the Seljuk era, a period marked by significant developments in Islamic spirituality and scholarship. The Seljuk era, renowned for its vibrant intellectual and spiritual dynamism, witnessed the flourishing of Sufism as a pivotal component of Islamic life and thought. This study aims to explore the profound interactions between Sufi mystics and the Hadith literature, highlighting how Sufis embraced, interpreted, and integrated the teachings of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) into their spiritual practices and doctrinal foundations. Furthermore, the study addresses the contributions of prominent Sufi scholars to the science of Hadith and their efforts in defending and disseminating authentic prophetic traditions. It also explores the challenges and controversies that arose from the Sufi use of Hadith, particularly in instances where their interpretations diverged from orthodox understandings.
