Abstract

This research article presents an analytical study of Sigmund Freud's theories on personality development and sexual maturation. Freud, a pioneering figure in psychology, introduced the concept that sexual instincts (libido) are present from birth, challenging the prevailing notion that sexuality emerges only during adolescence. He proposed a series of psychosexual stages, where unresolved conflicts could lead to psychological disorders in adulthood. The study delves into Freud's controversial theories, such as the Oedipus and Electra complexes, which describe a child's unconscious desires for the opposite-sex parent and rivalry with the same-sex parent. Freud's ideas on defense mechanisms, including repression, regression, displacement, and sublimation, are also explored, highlighting their role in managing unconscious desires and shaping personality. Despite criticism and ongoing debate, Freud's work has had a profound and lasting impact on psychology, particularly in understanding the complexities of human sexuality and personality formation.
