Abstract

The tool analogy in Sahih al-Bukhari is often used to clarify religious concepts or to highlight certain aspects of the Prophet’s hadiths by comparing them to tools or physical objects known in daily life. I will review some of the evidence in which the tool was used in a simile form: In the hadith of Ibn Omar, may God be pleased with them both, he said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: Among the trees is a tree whose leaves do not fall, and it is like a Muslim. Ibn Omar said: Then it occurred to me that it is the palm tree the talk. This hadith uses the tool (the tree) to liken a Muslim to a palm tree, in the strength and steadfastness of his faith. In the hadith of Anas bin Malik, may God be pleased with him, he said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: The likeness of a believer is like rain. The believer continues to achieve good. In this simile, the believer is likened to rain. Who brings good wherever he goes. On the authority of Abdullah bin Omar, may God be pleased with them both, he said: The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, took me by the shoulders and said: Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a passerby here. He likened the world to a tool (luggage) to highlight its shortness and transience. In the hadith of Abu Hurairah, may God be pleased with him. God said on his authority: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: Hasten to do good deeds, for there will be temptations like pieces of a dark night. A man will become a believer in the morning and an unbeliever in the evening, or a believer in the evening and become an unbeliever, selling his religion for an offer from this world. In this simile, a good deed is likened to a light that illuminates the path in the darkness. Sahih Al-Bukhari can be used to search for other similes where tools are used to clarify religious ideas and concepts in a deeper way. Remember the evidence of the simile in Sahih Al-Bukhari from the book The Beginning of Revelation to the book Al-Muktab in which the tool is mentioned. The simile tool is the kaf, as if, like, and others. It also mentions the likeness, the likeness of the thing, the face of the thing, and the moral beauty that appears due to the simile, the clarification of the expressions, and other important matters.
