Abstract

There are two types of punishment in Islamic jurisprudence (i) Hudud (ii) Tazeer. Islam does not believe in insulting anyone but teaches respect for humanity. So, insulting, defamation, contempt, humiliation and degradation of any prophet of Allah almighty is a very heinous crime in Islam. When someone commits blasphemy, such questions arise  e.g, what is the punishment for blasphemy in Islamic jurisprudence? Is the punishment for blasphemy considered as hudud or tazeer by Islamic jurists? Is there any difference in the punishment if the perpetrator of blasphemy is Muslim or a Dhimmi or not? And, Is the repentance of the one who commits blasphemy accepted or not? To find out the answers to such questions, four famous schools of Islamic jurisprudence i.e.(i) Hanafi (ii)Maliki (iii) Shafi'I (iv) Hanbali have been studied, in this research article.
