Abstract

Quranic exegesis, known as Tafsir, dates back to the prophetic era, however, it formally emerged as a distinct subject in the third century of the Hijri calendar. Throughout history, numerous scholars have contributed to this field, with Tafsir Ibne Kathir standing out as one of the most renowned and significant works. This article delves into the unique characteristics of Tafsir Ibne Kathir, with a particular emphasis on its treatment of Israelite narrations. One notable aspect of Tafsir Ibn Kathir is its meticulous scrutiny of Israelite narrations. The prevalence of unauthenticated reports from Christians and Jews in other Tafsir works has led to a downgrading of their scholarly standing. These Israelite narrations, containing unverified information, have had a substantial impact on the interpretation of the Quran. Imam Ibne Kathir, in his Tafsir, undertook a comprehensive analysis of the authenticity of Israelite narrations. This article aims to provide an analytical overview of Imam Ibn Kathir's methodology, focusing on how he categorized these narrations. Furthermore, the study explores the conditions under which certain types of Israelite narrations were deemed acceptable for reporting as discussed by Ibne Kathir.
